How to bid with Ashcroft and Moore
Bid Live Online (Sale day)
Every sale we hold is conducted live on several internet platforms. Our catalogs are posted about 2 weeks ahead of a sale on Liveauctioneers and Invaluable which includes bidders from Auctionzip and eBay. You must have an account (free of charge to establish) with these portals before the sale to bid online and you must register as a bidder. We will get notice that you want to participate and will accept your request based on your bidding history.
The buyer’s premium for property won online is slightly higher than it is for property won by phone bid, absentee bid or gallery bidding. See Buyer’s Premium in our Terms of Sale.
Bid Live by Phone (Sale day)
Ashcroft and Moore accepts phone bid requests up to 4 pm on the day prior to the sale and rarely thereafter, at our discretion. Please request a phone line as early as possible. On auction day an agent from our staff will call you a few minutes before your lot comes up for sale. She is your eyes and ears in the room. When the auctioneer opens the bidding for your lot, that agent will relay the opening bid price, tell you what you need to bid if there is competition and relay your bids to the auctioneer.
Absentee (Left) Bidding (In advance of the sale)
Absentee bids (also known as left bids) are a method of bidding for those who cannot or do not wish to attend a gallery auction. Ashcroft and Moore accepts absentee bid requests up to 4 pm on the day prior to the sale and rarely thereafter, at our discretion. This form of bid gives our auctioneer permission to bid as a proxy for you, starting at the lowest possible selling price. The auctioneer will bid on your behalf as long as there is competition, up to the maximum amount you have designated.
Absentee bids are time stamped, so the earlier an absentee bid is submitted, the better; the earlier of two identical absentee bids will win the day. That said, we continue to enter absentee bids during an auction if the call is received sufficiently in advance and from a registered bidder.
Please note that absentee bids left with third party online bidding services such as Live Auctioneers are released to us when a lot comes up for sale so we cannot distinguish these from bids made in real time. They have no time advantage.
Attend the Gallery Auction
Different from an Online Only Sale, you can register on auction day to receive a paddle to bid actively at our auction house. Check in at the front desk on the day of sale. Our doors open at least two hours before any auction and registration continues during the sale. An Ashcroft and Moore staff member will establish your credit (if you are a first time bidder), give you a paper paddle with a bidding number and you’ll be set to go.
The first time you bid with Ashcroft and Moore, we verify your credit. In addition to contact information, we may ask for your driver’s license number, credit card information and references. The first time you bid with Ashcroft and Moore, we’ll place a hold on your credit card equal to 10% of the combined low estimate of all the lots on which you wish to bid. We release this hold if you are not the winner of the lot(s).
How to settle your invoice
Winning bidders will be invoiced via email immediately after each sale and payment is due within five business days of a given sale. Purchases will not be released until payment has been received in full.
Third party bid sites may charge you a fee in addition to the auction houses buyer's premium.
Tax: Buyers will be required to pay the State of Pennsylvania Sales Tax of 6% at the time of payment unless the items are shipped out of the state of Pennsylvania by common carrier (trucking company, package delivery company, etc) OR the buyer provides Ashcroft and Moore with a valid Tax Exemption Number and submits the PA Tax Exemption Certificate Form.
